Dear J-

I’ve heard a lot of stories the past couple of days; for instance, there was the story of how my dad almost drowned when he was five (and that, dear Reader, would mean there would be none of this — no laptop, no work, spinning all the way back to a kid playing with a dog and following it around the lip of some open brine tanks in Qingdao). There was also the story of the exhausting months on the road, slowly moving from Qingdao to Jiangxi and on to Taiwan at thirteen and following the classmates to what must have felt like the ends of the earth.

There’s also the usual gossip about family members, some substantiated, some affecting people I know and care about, life goes on so I think maybe. I learned things you can’t unlearn.

I can’t remember the last time it’s been just me and my parents — probably at least twenty years, back to high school. Really. It’s been a pretty relaxing time, honestly, and I wish the circumstances were better but against all odds I’ve really enjoyed this time. Call me perverse.
